      Objectives of the Programme
      Coordinates and supports the Latin American and Caribbean System of Health Sciences Information, which includes national and PAHO/WHO documentation centers, and other specialized networks.
      Develops and promotes the use of tools for technical databases.
      Supports training and research activities in countries for the development of the database known as LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences) and the Virtual Health Library (VHL), for managing health science information in the Region.

      Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position
      Under the general supervision of the Director, IKM, and the direct supervision of the Director of BIREME, the incumbent serves as an Information Systems Specialist, and is specifically responsible for, but not necessarily limited to, the following assigned duties:

      a)Supervising the BIREME Units responsible for key information technologies including:

      - Research and Development: researching and developing Internet based methodologies and technologies for information and knowledge management, including the gathering, storing, indexing and retrieval of scientific and technical data, including the design and development of basic software, components and interfaces;
      - System Development: analyzing, designing, developing and implementing Internet based systems for the operation of health sciences technical and scientific information sources;
      - System Management: managing, maintaining, training and updating Virtual Health Library software architecture;

      b) Assisting in the development of major projects for submission to national and international cooperation agencies to raise funds to develop and strengthen BIREME and the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Information Centers; overseeing the implementation of appropriate projects;

      c) Assisting in the coordination of technical regional cooperation activities related to the research, development, adaptation, adoption and dissemination of information technology based methodologies and tools for the operation of the Virtual Health Library, ensuring that the following information sources are fully supported:
      - bibliographic related data bases, directories, numerical and factual data bases;
      - electronic publications;
      - multimedia and methodological tools to support health sciences education and decision making process;
      - selective dissemination of information;
      - networking of health sciences professionals, through virtual communities, communities of practices, lists of discussion, news and teleconferences;
      - integration of Virtual Health Library components, especially the "Descriptores en Ciencias de la Salud" (DeCS);

      d) Assisting the Director of the Center in the development of BIREME's plans, budgets, policies and official documents; representing BIREME in national and international meetings in the area of expertise;

      e) Providing administrative support in the absence of the Center Director;

      f) Performing other related duties, as assigned.

      A Bachelor's degree from a recognized university in engineering, management, information sciences, computer science, mathematics or a related discipline.

      Seven years of combined national and international experience in the management of information and informatics departments involved in scientific and technical information dissemination. Experience should include participation in technical cooperation programs and activities in the area of information and knowledge management..

      Very good knowledge of Portuguese, Spanish or English with a working knowledge of one of the others.

      Annual salary (Net of tax)
      US$ 48,242 at a single rate.
      US$ 51,682 with primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 23.2 % of the above figures. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctations or inflation.
